Is blepharoplasty safe? What are the complications associated with blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a safe proven procedure, with generally minor and infrequent complications that include ptosis of the upper eyelid or lagophthalmia caused by incorrect resection of the skin, scarring, and eyelid fold anomalies and very rarely visual changes or partial loss.

Potential patients are carefully screened by our oculoplastic surgeons to determine if surgery is the right option for them. Risks and benefits will be discussed prior to surgery so patients can make an informed decision.

Is a blepharoplasty procedure painful?

The procedure is not painful and not usually associated with significant discomfort due to the use of local anaesthetics and light sleep sedation. Following the procedure, some patients complain about an itchy, scratching sensation, but this typically only lasts an hour or so.

What is the recovery like after blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a safe and proven procedure and recovery is quite smooth. A certain level of bruising and swelling after the procedure is to be expected. In the days following the procedure, cold compresses as well as head elevation when lying flat will help to keep the bruising and swelling down and relieve discomfort. Patients return to see their oculoplastic surgeon and have the sutures removed one week after the procedure – sometimes self-absorbing stitches are used and these do not require removal.
After a week, the bruising will quickly subside. The majority of the swelling will diminish after two weeks. Most patients are able to return to work after seven days. It’s recommended that patients not exercise for three weeks following the procedure.

Does blepharoplasty leave scars?

As is the case with any surgery that requires an incision, scarring should be expected immediately after the procedure. However, scarring with blepharoplasty is quite subtle and heals well due to the incision being made along the natural fold of the eye.  Lower blepharoplasties that consist of only removing fat tissue can be performed with a transconjuctival incision, which is done inside the eyelid, rather than outside. This type of blepharoplasty is advantageous because it leaves no scar and the stitches are not visible.

Why are both products needed?

Facial muscle relaxants and dermal fillers both serve different purposes.
A facial muscle relaxant is used to treat dynamic wrinkles caused by repeated muscle contractions. These are the wrinkles that are caused when you smile or frown. These wrinkles are usually found around the eyes, across the forehead and between the eyebrows. The facial muscle relaxant is injected into the specific muscles, preventing you from creating those dynamic wrinkles.
Dermal fillers such as Juvéderm® or Restylane® are used to fill in deeper wrinkles, like the smile lines that run from the base of your nose to the corners of your mouth. It can also be used to add volume to your skin, enhancing the shape and contour of your face.

Will I lose my ability to make facial expressions after facial muscle relaxant injections?

Unfortunately, some celebrities have given facial muscle relaxant injections an undeserved reputation. As with everything else in life, too much of a good thing can be “bad”. The frozen, expressionless look sported by some stars is a result of too many units of facial muscle relaxant, and too many treatments in general.

In the hands of our experienced medical aesthetic professionals, the muscles that create negative expressions associated with negative emotions (like feeling mad, sad or stressed) will be relaxed, leaving you looking more relaxed and refreshed.

Will I sweat more in other areas after the procedure?

No. The underarm sweat glands—which only contain 2% of your body’s sweat glands—do very little to cool the body down, so your body doesn’t have to sweat more in other areas.
